MailMate r5878 gives error when attempting to use one iCloud account

Reported by Henry Seiden | March 19th, 2022 @ 06:30 PM

Hello,

I get an error when using this version that I never had before - IMAP problem for, "iCloud[henry.seiden]" account. Reads MailMate encountered the following error: 'Detected sequence number (4) larger than the number of messages (1) reported by EXISTS. Command:S5 UID FETCH1:* (UID)'. Mailbox:"INBOX".' No other options but to take offline.Try Later or Retry don't solve anything.

Don't know what to make of it. However do know that Mail.app works fine on this IMAP account. I'll have to fall back to earlier versions and see if the problem still happens. I am using an app-specific Password on this account as for other Apple accounts.

This happens repeatedly in the interval of two days, but rests when the iCloud account is offline for a day, so a two day cycle both ways on this server account (only one of two) for unknown reasons, both to get an error and until its recovery from the error.

    Good luck on this bug!

Sorry for not looking into your issues yet. I expect to have more time tomorrow.

A quick comment on the EXISTS error: This is most definitely a server issue. It might be ignored by other email clients, but that's not really safe to do. I had another report about this recently and it might be a sign of a general issue for iCloud. I'll keep an eye on that. A workaround isn't really straightforward given that the server appears to be confused.

It's interesting that the issue does not appear to be persistent. If you find some kind of pattern to reproduce it then let me know and I could try with my own iCloud account. Maybe it's somehow related to an iCloud INBOX containing 1 or 0 emails. Or given the sleep mode, it might be related to using another email client to delete/archive emails while MailMate is connected to the INBOX. These are just guesses.

The other report I had about this issue has been resolved. If I understand correctly, the other user found out that what Apple Mail showed for the Inbox did not match what he saw if he logged into the account on icloud.com. Bringing this difference to the attention of Apple, he got “an Apple Senior Advisor to hand this problem off to Apple’s engineers yesterday” (I'm not sure how he did this). The following day the issue was resolved and the account worked correctly in both Apple Mail and MailMate.
