Thanks for the feedback. This is not a known issue and many users are using MailMate with Gmail. Could you be very specific with regard to the steps needed to reproduce this problem? Maybe take a screenshot of the new account window.

In order to completely reset MailMate you can delete the following folder:

    ~/Library/Application Suppport/MailMate/

Also, when it hangs then please launch the Activity Monitor, select MailMate, and then click the “Sample Process” button. Attach the result to this ticket.

There are two nested problems in the email you received. The first problem is that Lighthouse (the service used for this ticket system) rejected your reply to the ticket. They are telling you to look here for trouble shooting: http://help.lighthouseapp.com/kb/getting-started/how-do-i-send-tick...

The other problem is that the reply sent by Lighthouse was identified as spam by your spam filter. Neither of these problems are directly related to MailMate, but let me know if you have any questions.

I'm very interested in resolving your initial problem with MailMate. If you prefer you can write to me directly via email: There is a link for that here: http://freron.com/contact/

I've also edited your report above such that your email address is no longer shown. Lighthouse-tickets are public and you probably don't want any spam-address-harvesters to pick up your address.

It is not I but lighthouse who need to troubleshoot their email service that apparently is unable to recieve and handle a perfectly legitimate email.

OK, fuck lighthouse. Here is my email that was rejected (attaching two screenshots aswell):

OK, removed the folder you mentioned below. Started MailMate.app and tried to import an imap account configured in thunderbird (one that contains perhaps 20 messages, standard imap, starttls and port 587 "submission"). MailMate hangs, Sample Process in Activity Monitor is waiting for a hanging process and won't finish. After force killing MailMate need to force kill Activity Monitor aswell because it is still waiting for the MailMate process due to the ongoing Sample Process. Attaching images of Import Account window and MailMate and Activity Monitor aswell.

Sending this with thunderbird, but am having issues with attachments in thunderbird, therefore trying mailmate.

(hmm, looks I need to attach the screenshots in two separate posts)

And also: Since I'm unable to configure mailmate I use thunderbird as an email client.

Found one error in my description above. Of course I'm not using port 587 for imap but for smtp. Imap is port 143 and starttls is used there aswell.

Thanks, the server (Dovecot) should certainly not be an issue. I use it myself. Importing the account from Thunderbird might then trigger some unknown bug. Try using “File ▸ Add IMAP account” instead.

It is strange that sampling does not work. Could you try sampling using the command line as well:

    sample MailMate 2

I just tried importing a Thunderbird account. No problems it seems. Are you asked about a password before it hangs? If not, then the hanging may be related to when MailMate attempts to retrieve the password from the system keychain.

    Martin Wendel November 19th, 2012 @ 12:33 PM

OK, I too was able to import one account (if ssl was turned off). When ssl turned on I get the Verify Certificate window (which I also should) and so I check "always trust *binero.se when connection to imap... and click connect and then mailmate hangs (as in non responsive whatsoever). sample obviously waits for the hanging process and outputs nothing. dtruss output of the hanging process is this (convinced there is not much to get out of that):

    724/0x209b8: 3406527 31023 8 __semwait_signal(0x5E03, 0x0, 0x1) = -1 Err#60

    ...

So you have no problems if you disable SSL?

I'll try to see if I can reproduce any problems with certificate verification.

  • Martin Wendel

    Martin Wendel November 19th, 2012 @ 12:56 PM

Using the file->Add imap account gives the same result, MailMate hangs, this time i don't even get the verify certificate window. uncehcking ssl makes no difference, mailmate hangs. And yes I rm -r ~Library/Application Support/MailMate between each attempt.

I feel I've spent more time than I would like to on troubleshooting a potential new email client. I'm experienced enough to understand that MailMate is having serious issues that will not be fixed in an instant. What I need is a stable email client that I can rely on. I guess I just will have to look elsewhere. Up until now I've been perfectly happy with thunderbird.

FYI: I feel there is an inconsistency as to when MailMate works or not. I seem to be unable to reproduce the successful configuration. Will try on another mac to verify if there is something wrong with my computer.

Thanks for the feedback you have provided. In general I receive very few crash/hang reports (they are sent automatically if the user allows it) and I really have no idea what's going on in your case. I'll update this ticket if a problem is fixed in the future which I believe could be related to your problem as well.

(If you have a secondary machine then maybe I could convince you to verify that you have the same issue on that machine.)

Kind of good news: I've had a second report which I'm pretty sure is the same problem. I know where to look in the code now and hopefully I'll be able to have a fix out fairly soon (tomorrow probably). I'll update this ticket in case you want to give MailMate a second chance.

The problem is related to the certificate window (an the keychain) and you probably have to reboot the machine to get back to normal.

Just a quick update on the nature of the problem:

    • It is triggered by changing trust settings when the certificate window is shown (and then clicking Connect). After that various keychain related things do not work.
    • Appears to only affect 10.7. It works for me on 10.8.2. This explains why the problem was not reported sooner
    • Older revisions of MailMate do not have this problem which means it is not a 10.7.5 issue.
    • The problem was introduced while I implemented support for S/MIME. I'm currently trying to pinpoint the revision of MailMate which introduced the problem. (This is a bit tedious because of the rebooting.)

The current workaround is to only click “Connect” without permanently trusting the certificate. It'll then work until the next time MailMate is launched.

Sorry about the delay. It was quite difficult to find the reason for this problem, but I've now both found what triggers it and a potential workaround/fix for it. It is related to codesigning and it could affect any application using the certificate window (SFCertificateTrustPanel) and codesigning done with 10.7.5+. The hang only occurs on 10.7.5.

The hang is caused by an Apple bug which I have now reported (rdar://12740451). It is possible to make Apple Mail behave like MailMate if codesigned differently.

I'll update this ticket when an update is available.

Unfortunately I forgot to update this ticket. The issue was in fact fixed shortly after the last update to this ticket.
