Unable to delete IMAP source

Reported by Steve Mayer | August 6th, 2012 @ 10:55 PM

Using MailMate 1.4.3beta (2980).

I right click on an IMAP source, choose 'Remove source' from the menu. After the warning dialog, all the source does is go into offline mode.

There doesn't appear to be a way to delete the source.

Thanks,

Steve

MailMate refuses to fully delete an account as long as it contains any messages which are not known to be synchronized with an IMAP server. This is not clearly reflected by the GUI, but you should check out which messages are left behind within the offline account. Make sure it is not messages that you would expect to be on the server. For example, non-uploaded drafts or sent messages or you may have moved some messages to another offline account which has prevented MailMate from completing the move.

Note that if you enable the UID column in the messages outline then you can see if a message has been assigned an id on the server which should mean it exists on the server (and vice versa).

The above may enable you to provide some additional information about your problem if there is no way to solve it (if you cannot delete or move the problematic messages).

The implicit feature request is that MailMate should be better at reporting what the problem is and offer to 'force delete' the account, that is, delete any messages within it including those not present on the server.

So, after the move from me.com to icloud.com, there were some changes in server names and such. I imported the new icloud.com settings from Mail.app, leaving the existing me.com server intact. After I verified that the new icloud.com server was functioning properly, I tried to remove the me.com source. All I need to do is clean up this server from being seen within MailMate and any local folder hierarchy related to it. Whether the messages are synced to the server is not important to me at this point as the icloud.com server is managing those messages now.

    Hope that clarifies things.

    Thanks!

It is important if there are messages within your old iCloud account which were never uploaded to the server (for whatever reason -- maybe even a bug in MailMate). You should be able to see the messages blocking deletion of the account by selecting the account under SOURCES. These messages need to be handled before the account can be fully removed. The “force delete“ non-existing feature would be one way to do this, but for now we'll have to handle it manually. First I would like to figure out why there are messages blocking deletion of the account.

(If you only have a single account then it might be easiest to simply start over completely by deleting/moving ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate, but I would prefer first figuring out why deletion is blocked. If you do start over then I recommend first updating to the latest beta of MailMate.)

Okay, so looking under the SOURCES for messages, I find 6 messages in a mailbox called 'Deleted Messages'. Other than that, all my other mailboxes under this account are empty.

Good, at least the messages are not important then. Can you delete these messages and then delete the account after that?

Once I brought the source back online and did a full sync, I was able to delete the source successfully. Thanks for your help!

I am getting this same error. Only items left in the deleted messages folder are remaining. All other folders were cleaned out. I tried to delete the files in that folder but all that did was mark them red but they did not delete. What should I do next?

If you have a second account in MailMate then you could try to drag them to an IMAP folder in that account (for example, into Deleted Messages of the account). When uploaded to the server then I believe MailMate is going to accept that the now empty account is deleted.

If you have any idea why these messages only exist in MailMate (and apparently) not on the server then please share. Are they deleted draft messages? Imported messages?

I took the account online and it let me remove the source. Before it would not. However the difference between the two events was that the first time I tried to delete the account while online I had messages in the sent folder. Once I deleted those (they moved to deleted messages folder) and took it backonline I could remove the source. I hope that helps.
