Where are tags/IMAP keywords saved on disk?

Reported by Andrew Gioia | January 14th, 2021 @ 07:26 PM

Apologies if this is inappropriate for Lighthouse but I can't find anything in the manual about where in the .eml or anywhere on disk that an email's tags are saved. I'm trying to verify that my tags are syncing correctly with a new service (Zoho).

There don't appear to be any IMAP keywords in a .eml that I open. Are these always on the server or does the local copy have them as well?

    • State changed from “new” to “closed”

If the server supports custom IMAP keywords then tags are synchronized with the server. They are only shown in MailMate if they are “mapped” to tags in the Tags preferences pane. This mapping is in the Tags.plist file here:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/

If the server does not support custom IMAP keywords (Exchange IMAP and very few others) then tags only work locally and they are lost if the database files are lost. Ideally, they were also put in .eml file metadata, but that is not currently the case.

If you can install MailMate on another machine then you can verify that the tags are synchronized. Note that some IMAP servers have a maximum number of custom keywords.

    I hope this helps.
