Performance issue typing emails

Typing the main body of text in MailMate (either composing or replying) is super slow.
That is, when I type at normal speed, a few words show up fine, and then it hangs and no new characters are displayed for awhile. Eventually they show up, but it's incredibly difficult to compose messages like this.
This only happens in MailMate. Chrome, Firefox, TextEdit, etc... don't have any issues. It also happens on both of my Macs: one is a MacBook Pro 13" 2018, and the other is a MacBook Air 13" 2014.
It's been happening for awhile now, unfortunately, so I'm not sure what changed on the computers when it started happening any longer.
