duplicates created when importing .mbox files from Apple mail

Hi,
I am trying to import .mbox files from Apple Mail using Import Messages...
When I do, the message count goes up and there are a lot of duplicates.
Find duplicates is not really working. My read of the other tickets is that it is not that robust and there is not an easy fix.
Any thoughts? Something to try?
