Feature Request: Display HTML-based message in browser (rather than Mail)

Reported by Mike Conley | November 10th, 2018 @ 05:44 PM

It would be handy to be able to open an HTML-formatted message in my default browser. The command would be something like Open in Browser and it would appear at the bottom of the Message menu, right with Open in Finder and Open in Apple Mail.

You mean just the HTML body of the message?

Right. As a way of seeing what the message would look like in an HTML-enabled mail client such as Mail. Once I've checked it over with MailMate, I may want to see how the full version of the message would appear.

For messages you have composed yourself?

MailMate can display HTML for both incoming and composed messages? (Using a WebView which would be identical to what Safari does.)

In general, there's no easy way of knowing what an email is going to look like in other email clients unless you subscribe to one of the marketing-email-services which can generate this for you. Such services are quite expensive though.

Sure, I understand that HTML mail is crap, and that it is inconsistent between clients.

I don't see any option to view the message in a WebView; how do I do it?

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Viewer: If you have enabled “Prefer Plain Text” then you still have access to the HTML part using ⌥⌘]. See the “View ▸ Message Body Parts” menu.

Composer: Enable the preview using the toolbar button and/or change the Preview setting in the Composer preferences pane.

    Ah. Okay, that works. Cheers.

    Well, actually, it doesn't.

Here's an email with a Content-Type: text/html tag, containing HTML code, but which does not preview as HTML in MM. I don't get an option to view the HTML body part. I've attached a screenshot of the View > Message Body Parts menu and of the original message for you to look at.

Hm. I quit MM, went through my com.freron.MailMate.plist file and deleted every Mm* entry that had a WebKit in it, and started the app up again, and now I get proper HTML display when I ask for it. Maybe something was messed up. Seems to be okay now.
