Hang during initial import

Reported by Janine Ohmer | December 23rd, 2011 @ 07:52 PM

I just installed MailMate today, and set it to importing my accounts from Mail.app. It went well for a while but finally hung, seemingly on my mac.com account (at least that is where the spinner was in the account list). After quite a while I force quit it and got the stack trace included below.

I restarted MailMate and it went back to processing my mac.com account (again, going by the spinner). It hasn't hung yet, and the message count in the All Messages folder is steadily increasing, so I know it's working. However, it's responding slower and slower to mouse clicks, so I won't be surprised if it hangs again.

I have a lot of saved mail; All Messages has over 82,000 messages in it and they're still coming. Is this an unusually large amount for the typical MailMate user?

80K messages is not unusual, but it is in the high end. This can be problematic both with regard to memory and speed. (I have 20K messages myself.)

MailMate is very ambitious with regard to what is parsed and made available for searching - and it also has a very flexible smart mailbox system (which is used internally in MailMate as well) which can be quite memory hungry for large email stores. Various optimizations are planned, but they are not next on my list.

You may find some of the hidden preferences to be useful. Or the “Mailbox ▸ Edit Subscriptions...” menu item if there are mailboxes you would like MailMate to ignore. This is the best I can offer you for now.

Let me know if you think the problem is not just the number of messages.

I'll close the ticket, but that does not mean I do not have focus on the problem. Just hard to say when such a problem is “solved”. (And you can still add comments to the ticket.)

When it finally finished, All Messages had 205,375 messages in it. Yikes! It's over 10 years worth of mail, both personal and business. Interestingly, a similar smart mailbox in Mail only found 200,385. Not sure why there's such a large discrepancy, but it doesn't really matter. Once All Messages finished loading, performance of the app seems to be fine.

Does the import pull messages from the IMAP servers, or from the files Mail has on disk? It found some folders in my mac.com account which have been deleted for a while and don't show up in iCloud's webmail view. Each folder is displayed with the name greyed out and (failed) appended, so it didn't actually find any old messages, just traces of the folders. I tried deleting one and it's name turned red and the (failed) was removed, but it didn't go away. It's still there after a restart.

Is there any way to hide the INBOX folder within each account? Or turn off the grouped conversations? Those are the only two things bugging me so far (aside from the phantom folders).

“All Messages” does not include messages in mailboxes dedicated to junk or deleted messages. The total count can be seen by selecting the account under SOURCES. I don't know why it would be smaller in Apple Mail.

Import pulls messages from the IMAP server.

The “failed” mailboxes are interesting. If you are able to do so then you could try to use the Activity Viewer (⌘0) to find out what exactly fails and then send the log to me. These mailboxes must be in a kind of state that MailMate cannot handle properly. You can probably fix the problem by using “Edit Subscriptions” to make MailMate skip these mailboxes.

Currently no way to hide the INBOX (or any of the other standard mailboxes) under each account. I kind of like that MailMate displays exactly what is on the server, but eventually I should make this optional, e.g., with a “Show/Hide Standard Mailboxes” in the context sensitive menu of an account.

Threading (grouped conversations) can be turned off via “View ▸ Organize by Thread”. I think you can then also save it as default by using “Use as Default Columns” in the messages outline (right-click the headers). Not quite intuitive :-)
