"Organize by thread" working inconsistently
Reported by Peter Borsella | April 9th, 2018 @ 03:42 PM
Hello,
Attached is a screenshot example of a selected conversation that is
not organizing itself by thread even though that option is turned
on. It happens periodically and I cannot detect what might be
happening with the messages that could cause this.

MailMate only shows emails as threaded when they have a parent-child relationship, that is, one message is a direct reply to the other. This is pretty strict and threads are “broken” whenever an intermediate message is not in the current mailbox.
Could this explain it?
It's still on my todo to provide a more liberal threading strategy.
(I deleted the image since it seemed to of a somewhat private nature.)

Thanks for the quick response, Benny, and also for deleting the potentially sensitive screenshot. Your explanation makes sense, but in this case I was having an exchange back and forth with the party in question, responding directly to each other. Could there be some server setting on the recipient's end that is somehow morphing information in the header that breaks the appearance the messages are part of the same conversation?

It's unusual that headers needed do not exist, but you can try sending me an example message and its reply (via Help ▸ Send Feedback) and I can take a look myself. Drag them into the Composer and they should be attached including the headers. If you cannot share the content then get the headers instead using ⌥⌘U and copy/paste.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, Benny,
Apparently I can't use Help + Send Feedback; I get an "You do not have access to post to the MailMate project." error.
Anyway, I'm attaching two files that represent a message I sent and the corresponding reply that do not connect via a conversation. Before researching too much, in this case one of the messages is in my sent folder, and the other I deleted, so if that makes a different let me know and I’ll get another example from my inbox.
Thank you!

That error message does not seem to be related to sending feedback, but in any case you sent me the wrong data. I think you hit ⌃⌘U instead of ⌥⌘U?

Hi, Benny,
I've not been able to use email to respond as I am continuing to get an error message in delivering the notes, but I'm hoping what I've attached in my latest post here gets you what you need for any additional research.
Many thanks!.....Peter -

In my email managing strategy I tend to delete the original message in the thread, and only keep the ones that need action in my inbox. However, this will not work with MailMate because as soon as I delete the original message all the other replies show as individual messages.
I guess there is no hidden option to still group them? The Thread Arcs layout still shows they are related, but it does help in keeping my mailbox clean.

@Eelco: It is correct that this cannot work better as long as MailMate does not provide a grouping-kind of threading. This is still on my todo.

As a new user, I'm also running into this very often. It's not so bad with individual correspondence, but with things like GitHub issues, it's very difficult to process email when they won't collapse into threads. I'd love for something simpler based on subject. I'm kind of working around it with Submailboxes and the custom Github headers, but it's not ideal. I'd be happy to sponsor the feature if that's a thing.

@Ben: It's certainly possible that sponsoring can change my priorities, but it's hard for me to put a number on the amount of work required. A wild guess is that I've done 50% of the work needed for this feature, but that's just a wild guess. Then there's also the problem of my idea of how it's going to work might not be exactly what you have in mind. You can write me an email to tell me how much the feature is worth to you and then that might motivate me to prioritize it :-) And then you only pay if the feature matches your requirements.

I have this same issue, with the latest version of MailMate. Frankly, it's quite frustrating... threading my inbox is a MAJOR feature requirement. I frankly like Mailmate a lot, but it's lacking some key features like that that keep it from being my "#1" tool. Also, I literally use about 5 mail programs actively:
- Postbox (OSX Only)
- Spark
- Mailmate (OSX Only)
- Airmail
- Emailganizer (IOS Only)
Anyway, the threading issue is pretty major...and a consistent solution that works well is important

The "Organize by Thread" is not working for me, either. It appears to work in "Correspondence" layout, but not in any other layout. I'm testing MailMate version 1.13.1 (5671) on an old MacBook running macOS El Capitan (10.11.6).

There is something very confusing about the Organize by Thread feature, at least for me. Even if the option is selected, MM fails to show a hierarchical view of the threads (with disclosure triangles). The only way that I can get it to display a hierarchical view of the threads (with disclosure triangles) is to enable Organize by Thread AND then click on the “Thread” button in the toolbar WHILE NO MESSAGE IS CURRENTLY SELECTED.
When I do that, then MM displays a line that reads “Same threads” on the left with Details, Save and - buttons on the right, as if I was currently viewing a smart folder, and THEN the messages get all organized hierarchically by threads.
But if I exit that state with the line that reads “Same threads” on the left with Details, Save and - buttons on the right, then MM stops displaying a hierarchical view of the messages.
And if I hit the “Thread” button in the toolbar when a specific message is selected, then of course MM only shows the thread for THAT message.
I don't know what menu command this “Thread” button in the toolbar corresponds to. But it's strange that I have to find a way to DESELECT my currently selected message (not easy to do!) and THEN hit it to get a hierarchical view of all threads in my inbox.
It doesn't seem to be right. Am I doing something wrong or misunderstanding something?

'Softer' threading seems to be one of the key features missing at the moment. Everything else looks great and is really clean. On my new install and sync I have a lot of broken threads where Postbox shows them as one thread.
Would be great to include soon.
