Problems syncing Gmail with possible large attachments
Reported by Daniel Salama | March 1st, 2018 @ 05:22 AM
I am evaluating Mailmate and so far find it to be great. I started using it in my office mac and it took about a week to sync my Gmail emails (about 900K emails).
I installed it in my home office mac and it's been trying to sync for almost two weeks and it still has not finished (same mailbox). Today, I started receiving this error dialog box:
IMAP problem for “XXXXXXX” account
MailMate encountered the following error: “Server response:
“I5 BAD [TOOBIG] Message too large. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6584#limit”.”.
Mailbox: “[Gmail]/All Mail”.
I don't understand how it is possible for MM to have finished syncing in one computer with no problem (albeit the length of time) and yet produce this error syncing the same mailbox in another computer.
Thank you

The error message seems to indicate that MailMate is trying to upload a message which is too big for the server. Try selecting the “All Messages”, enable the “Size” column and sort by this column to locate any extraordinarily large emails. If you also enable the UID column then you can locate any emails which have not been uploaded yet (drafts/sent messages). If you find a problem email then you can delete it by holding down ⌥ and select “Message ▸ Delete Now”.
Let me know if this does not help.

I sorted the All Mail folder by size desc and there were many messages that appear to exceed the published Gmail 25MB size limit. The strange thing is that all these messages already exist in my Gmail/All Mail folder and they some of them are fairly recent. How could that be possible? (see attached)
Thank you

Well, if the 25MB limit is on attachment size then the resulting email can be much bigger because of inefficient email encoding (base64).
Please also enable the “UID” column. Anything without a UID is something that MailMate is going to try to upload and this is when the error occurs. Do you have many of these or maybe just 1 recently created in MailMate?

My apologies I posted the previous response multiple times but for some reason your site was giving me an error.
Anyway, I think I found the culprit. See attached. There is an email that does not have a UID value with an attachment that is 41MB in size.
Now, what I don't get is why would MM be trying to upload that message since that's a message that I received. Also, that message is in my GMail/All Mail folder when I view it on the web.
I would not want to delete it because it's a valid message that was sent to me and not one that I was trying to send and exceeded Gmail's size limit.
Please advise.
Thanks

Sorry about the late response. To make it synchronize I suggest you drag the email out of MailMate to make sure you have a copy. Then delete it by holding down ⌥ and use “Message ▸ Delete Now”.
There's no obvious explanation on how this email came into existence (if you haven't somehow duplicated it). MailMate wouldn't delete it on the server unless explicitly told to so which means I suspect there's also a copy on the server. Note that you can sort by size in the message list. That'll make it easier to see if it already exists.

It is a mistery. As I mentioned in a previous post, I have MM running in two different computers (home and work) syncing the same mailboxes. The work computer had no problem syncing all messages, including the large message in question. The home computer would not sync past that message. I ended up removing the attachment from the message but the behavior remains unexplained.
