Renaming folders creates severe nervous disorder

Reported by Gary Sanctuary | May 2nd, 2017 @ 02:21 PM

My system: MailMate/5347 MacBookPro8,2/x86_64/8/10.11.6

Hello,

The problem

I’m renaming folders but instead of the folders being renamed, duplicates are created and the previous folder will either;

  • remain with a (failed) suffix.
  • lose its folder icon but the disclosure triangle remains.
  • turn red.

In the past I've rebooted MailMate to get around these problems but it's an annoying process to have to keep doing. Instead I've tried to document this latest problem whilst keeping the Activity Viewer open so as to log the proceedings. (The AV is sometimes polling away for up to 15 minutes. I don't know whether this is normal).

(NOTE: In the interests of readability I've use … to indicate the rest of the folder name. The pictures show the full story. )

  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.20.03.png - I rename -AAA April… to -AAA May…
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.21.39.png - I logged into RoundCube to double check and -AAA May… has been created but the sub-folders remain in -AAA April… [^NFO]
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.27.03.png - MailMate eventually (6 minutes later?) updated so I removed the word "Edit". This caused more anguish.
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.28.33.png - Here's what Activity Viewer was displaying.
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.44.03.png - 15 mins later and the problem still remains (and still remains as I write this at 14:20)
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 13.44.21.png - Here's what Activity Viewer was displaying. It had been polling the account most of this time.
  • Screenshot 2017-05-02 14.24.57.png - Another screenshot from RoundCube and the story is even more confusing.

My initial moan was that I have to wait each time I make changes as I'm worried that if I continue editing before the changes have filtered through, I'll be creating even more mess and confusion but according to RoundCube in this case the problems I have seem quite extensive.

I'm hoping the log may give you some kind of idea as to what's going on.

I've had folder naming problems since trying your app. I really like what it offers but I find the folder renaming procedure a deal breaker. I've looked on the forums and nobody else seems to have a problem with this. I do have a large archive of email. Is this possibly the reason?

[^NFO]: Yet MailMate is suggesting the opposite as the folders in -AAA April… are red.

I fixed some issues related to this fairly recently. Could you try the latest test version like this: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane. Then try to reproduce the issue.

(I'm on vacation this week and I might take some time to reply despite the seriousness of the issue. Sorry in advance.)

I can't repeat the problem. If it happens again I'll let you know.
Hope you had a good holiday.

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Thanks for the update. (I did have a good Holiday.)

    Er,

Now it's resolved I'm not quite sure whether I should be posting here but it seems wrong to start another ticket. So…

Just to confirm; I’m using Version 1.9.6 (5371)

    • Dropbox - 4 emails inside
    • Interarchy - 1 email inside
    • Scanbot - 4 emails inside

I rename the prefix 'ATref' parent to '-ref-'. The result was the loss of the folder icon (it's just a disclosure triangle) with the sub-folders left inside unmoved whilst the '-ref-' was created above.

    Screenshot 2017-05-10 21.47.16.png

I physically move the sub-folders to the newly created folder and the red folders are left. These may disappear when I reboot MMate. There's no guarantees what will happen with the now dud parent folder (without an icon).

    Nervous tic

What's surprising is that there are so few sub emails involved in this. Lots of emails within a folder being renamed seem to be the recipe for this kind of behaviour but there are just 9 involved with this.

At least the holiday went well.
