Rendering of some (plain text?) emails is slow

When I open a message MailMate gets stuck for a second or two. I have a feeling that it happens only with plain text emails, HTML messages render much faster.
Another data point that makes me think that problem is with rendering: changing theme for plain text messages in preferences has the same effect.
Any ideas what might be the cause or how do I debug this?
