related message search and multi-word subject prefixes

Reported by Robert Brenstein | February 3rd, 2017 @ 05:23 PM

If I double-click a message holding the shift key or use the contextual menu to search for related messages, MailMate sets a filter that shows all messages with the same subject or whatever column I was clicking. This is really great functionality.

When searching by subject, this works when the subject begins with no prefix or single-word prefixes. That is, MM finds correctly all messages ignoring all the initial single words with colon as their last char. At least that is how I see its operation.
For example, it nicely shows together all the messages with subjects as follows:

Help: Odd menu behavior
Re: Help: Odd menu behavior
AW: Help: Odd menu behavior
Re: AW: Help: Odd menu behavior

However, it fails when the subject prefix contains spaces. For example, it finds only 1 of the following 2 messages:

Moodle in English: Using LaTex in GIFT
Moodle in English: Re: Using LaTex in GIFT

Another example where it fails and shows only 1 of the following 2 messages:

Deutsche Moodler: Nur einmal einschreiben
Deutsche Moodler: Re: Nur einmal einschreiben

To see all messages, I have to open one of the messages, copy the subject past this prefix and then paste it into the search box and press return. Doing that several times a day feels like too much effort and I noticed that I am slacking with my participation in those lists.

Is there a way to tell MM to treat, for example "Moodle in English," the same as a single-word prefix?

I've never seen such prefixes myself. Usually it would be so-called blobs: [Moodle in English]. This free-text variant would be very hard to handle in general, but I'll make sure that when I make prefix-detection more general (for other reasons) then I also check that it'll work for cases like the above.

    Sorry about the late reply.

I agree that most users will not see such prefixes ever. Unfortunately, I am on several lists that use them. I was thinking that may be MM could accept user-specified strings that it recognizes as subject prefixes. Having to specify these manually would be fine. They are not an issue for one-off mails but only for mailing lists.

This is also the type of solution I plan for you.
