Feature request: use search syntax in "Mailbox Search"

Reported by Zvi Biener | January 25th, 2017 @ 06:18 PM

Although the global search box can use the excellent search syntax, initiating a current mailbox search using "Mailbox Search" or ("mailboxSearch:"), results in the GUI for search opening. Feature request: allow search syntax for mailboxSearch. Perhaps just by adding a selection in the search dropdown box called "Use syntax" or bumping the search into the global search box? Thanks.

Isn't that already implemented? See https://manual.mailmate-app.com//view and scroll down to "Toolbar search" and further to the table with "the currently supported modifiers".

Thanks, Robert. My suggestion was more specific: use the modifiers for the "mailboxSearch:" key binding, not just the global search box. However, you make me read the manual more carefully, and I now realize that holding down the option key turns the global search box to the equivalent of the "mailboxSearch:" key binding. That really does make the modifier search work just as easily for local mailboxes, without having to default to current mailbox search all the time. So.. thanks! I'll try to remove the request now.

It looks like I can't do it myself. BENNY, PLEASE CONSIDER THIS REQUEST NULL AND VOID. Sorry for the hassle.

I'd like this feature request to be an active one. I currently find myself often using the double-click feature on the from: and subject: lines in order to filter similar messages to take some type of action. Typically to delete them.

I've personally forced my search scope to the Current Mailbox. This is super powerful when combined with using a key binding to go to a target mailbox and have the search filter continue to be applied.

The next step in the equation is to support an argument within the key bindings for mailboxSearch: If the key binding is an array then the search criteria would be supplied and executed. Otherwise, if it's just mailboxSearch: then jump to the search field and wait.

I've attached an image of what this might look like in the plist. Of course, the search string could use the existing syntax

@Matt: I agree that a key binding for doing formatted searches (searches based on currently selected message) would be very useful and I've been taking steps to implement it a few times. I'll note to take another one. (I'm expecting to do it in a slightly more general way than described, but it's very close to your suggestion.)

Awesome @benny. You're an awesome software developer! I can't wait to have my mail client work just like vim ;)

    Hi @benny,
Did anything ever come of this? I would love to have a keybinding for doing a toolbar search (so I can do everything in text with no mouse clicking).
    Best,
    ---Pedro

Nevermind @benny, I'm a dolt. Figured it out:
"/" = "searchAllMessages:"; Best mail program ever!
