MailMate styles outgoing messages with font-family:sans-serif

Reported by Yogananda | January 22nd, 2017 @ 11:19 PM

Hi there!

I notice that the HTML sections of messages sent with MailMate are styled with font-family:sans-serif. In Apple Mail, this makes them render in Helvetica rather than in my default message-viewing font. Apple Mail and Gmail don't add any such styling. I find this behavior quite surprising, given that not styling emails is one of the philosophical cornerstones of MailMate. Is there any way to remove this styling?

Thanks!

The no-styling approach of MailMate did not work well since this made MailMate emails look ugly in too many other email clients (and then in MailMate after a reply was generated). My strategy is now to, by default, try to use what works best for most people, but this is incredibly tricky. I introduced sans-serif in an attempt to work around an issue with Outlook email clients which default to a (what users perceive) as a very ugly font. I got a lot of (negative) feedback on that.

But your report shows that this is not a perfect solution (and I guess the same problem must exist for Apple Mail or Gmail unless they somehow trigger Outlook to behave differently).

The font is currently hardcoded in the so-called mmTheme files. You can make your own file to get around this, but it's probably better if we find a solution which is easier and maybe even better default behavior -- if possible.

(Testing is very difficult. The next time I work on this then I should probably use something like https://litmus.com.)

The “quick” solution might just be a preference to control the font-family setting in any theme, but I would like to find something better than that.

Hmm, yes I see. I guess I won't hold out hope for a quick resolution, but thanks for the quick reply!
