MailMate slows down heavily when copying a large number of messages from one account to another

Reported by Yogananda | January 17th, 2017 @ 01:50 PM

Hi there!

I am trying to migrate about 20,000 messages from one google mail account to another. All the messages are in a single folder. When I select the folder and option-click and drag the folder from one account to another, MailMate seems to initiate the copy just fine, however, after a while the interface starts to lag heavily. Every command takes at least two or three seconds to complete, even a simple message select.

This makes the transfer take a seriously long time, as you can imagine. So I am currently trying it out in Thunderbird instead, which seems to be behaving itself. Any idea what this could be?

For reasons I could go into if you are interested, I suspect that it has to do with a large number of duplicate messages...

Ok thanks!

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

Deleting a lot of messages can make MailMate lag for some time since the database updating is distributed over time, but this is not the case for moving/copying messages. I don't think duplicates play a role, but I could be wrong.

You can run the following command to generate a sample for me. That'll provide a hint with regard to what MailMate spends time on:

    sample MailMate 10 -f ~/Desktop/sample_mailmate.txt

(MailMate was not designed to do mass migration, but it should of course still work.)

I've been futzing around with it since filing the ticket, and I've removed and re-added the accounts multiple times now, so I'm having trouble reproducing it myself. If it crops up again I'll grab sample it and update the ticket.

In the meantime, I'm doing the migration by batch — which is made very simple by a smart mailbox that shows messages in the source folder that do not occur in the destination folder.

    Thanks again.
