edit as new message -- do not make it disappear

Reported by Robert Brenstein | January 10th, 2017 @ 04:57 PM

When I am viewing an incoming message, I can select the item "Edit as new message" to clone this message, both in the list view and when viewing such a message in its own window.

When I am editing a new message, that item is replaced with "Send now" (the same keyboard shortcut).

When I save it to drafts, the same item is replaced by "Edit draft" (the same keyboard shortcut) in the list view and "Send now" after opening the draft.

I believe that "edit as new message" should NOT be replaced by "send now" or "edit draft". In other words, I should be able to clone the current message at any time (current = selected in the list OR displayed in the edit OR the view window). Yes, I used that functionality a lot in Eudora. I use MM as my mail client for a week only and already stumbled into this restriction a few times.

Using the same keyboard shortcut for totally different functionality (what have send to do with edit?) is confusing.

"Delete" converts into "Delete Now" when the option key is kept down. Why not do the same for "Send"?

It would be fine if "Edit draft" stays but converts into "Edit as new message" when the option key is down.

MailMate takes this from Apple Mail and the “logic” is kind of reverse. The shortcut is primarily intended to be used to “Send”, but if the currently selected message is not a draft then MailMate does the next-best thing and creates a new message based on the currently selected message.

But I agree that it's confusing that the shortcut is shared and I don't like the risk of unintentionally sending something when trying to create a new message. It's tricky to change these things though, because other users also have a hard time to get used to changes in behavior. (I'm getting emails even when changing very small details of behavior.)

    I'll give this some thought.

The latest test release changes the behavior of these menu items. “Edit as New Message...” should always work now and the two functionalities (sending and copying) are now completely separated.
