confusing behaviour of the smart mailbox 'recent'

Reported by Robert Brenstein | January 5th, 2017 @ 06:50 PM

As I am trying to figure out what good the recent flag is for, I noticed an odd behaviour of the smart mailbox Recent as it was setup by MailMate.

The mailbox is set to show the count of recent messages. It shows 14. However, the message list shows 21 msgs.

When I click the exposure triangle and the total of counts for all sub mailboxes is 18. There is also discrepancy between the number of messages shown for each sub mailbox with its counter.

Furthermore, clicking at the mailbox itself shows only mails in the INBOXes whereas mails in other mailboxes are included in submailboxes.

I have a screen shot that illustrates that, but there is no option to attach it here.

I just noticed that the smart folder Unread (that also came standard with MailMate) exhibits similar behaviour. Here, however, the number of messages shown in each list matches the count shown. The discrepancy is only between the main mailbox and submailboxes.

    • State changed from “new” to “reproduced”

The Recent flag is actually quite useless. Most IMAP servers don't implement it correctly and with the so-called CONDSTORE extension then it's even worse (one could argue MailMate should handle it better in this case).

Just to make sure, note that the count of a mailbox is controlled via “Mailbox ▸ Displayed Count”.

Hmm, I have pretty large counts on my mailboxes and I hadn't noticed any discrepancies. I do see now though that the Unread mailbox appears to be off by 2 compared to its submailboxes. This “resolved” after relaunching MailMate. This probably means I can reproduce the issue.

    ...

I've now inserted a test in my own code to detect when the Unread counts are wrong (and then crash to make sure I'm notified :) ).

Yes, I noticed that items showing the recent folder seem quite odd and have nothing to do with what I would see as recent. I will replace that folder with another one, like that showing last week of emails in examples. However, as you can see from my 2nd contribution here, the issue goes beyond recent. I just sent you 2 screen shots via the feedback option in MM. I have only a few mailboxes so far, so the difference is possibly clearer to see.
