Attaching files that are really folders fails with disappearing dialog box

Just tried to attach an OmniGraffle file to an email. Even though graffle files show as files in the Finder, they are really folders.
MailMate pops up a dialog box to explain that it can't attach a folder, but this dialog immediately disappears. I had to record my screen to step through and see what it said.
At the least, the dialog box needs not to disappear. Even better would be auto-zipping.
