Replied messages not marked read or replied

Reported by Ken Ficara | February 18th, 2016 @ 02:12 AM

When I reply to messages in Mailmate, they remain marked unread and do not have a replied icon.

    There is no feature in MailMate to automatically mark replied emails as read. If it was the default behavior then other users would like complain.

    The missing replied icon, I assume, is because the unread dot takes precedence. It should appear if the message is marked as read?

    You can create a smart mailbox for email with the “\Answered” keyword. Then add a rule to that with a single action which marks emails as “Seen”. This should result in the behavior you are looking for. (Rules are available in the mailbox editor accessed via “Mailbox ▸ Edit Mailbox...”.)

    I'm now amused that despite your rude reply, this is actually an "accepted" feature request. Any clue when it will be implemented?

    @Ken: The “accepted“ feature is to make more events available for setting up behavior like this yourself. I sometimes mark something as “accepted” without it meaning that I'm going to implement exactly what the original poster requested. In that case I'll outline what I think about it in my reply.

    I'm very sorry that you consider my initial reply to be rude. I do my best to be friendly and informative. In my initial reply I tried to provide a workaround for solving your main problem. English is not my primary language and maybe something was lost in translation. (There's a typo. I meant to write “likely” and not “like” in the first sentence.)

    There are 2 followers of ticket #402. It's not an issue that comes up frequently neither on the ticket system or by private email. MailMate has many other issues which are important to many more users. I know you feel strongly about this issue, but you must believe that I'm doing my best here. I'm not on some mission to frustrate you even if that is the result. I'm willing to help to the best of my abilities and time available, but please stop with the hyperbole.

    Please accept a refund (send me an email). Then let me know the exact behavior you need in MailMate (without hyperbole) and I'll contact you when I believe that is working. Every other email client has gotten this right which means you have plenty of alternatives until I also get it right.

    Never mind about describing the “exact behavior”. I can see that is available in ticket #402. I'll update that ticket when/if MailMate some day behaves as you expect of any email client.

    @Ken:

    For the next update of MailMate I've added this preference:

    defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmAlwaysMarkRepliedEmailsAsRead -bool YES

    It marks replied, forwarded, and redirected emails as read. If it works well then I'll add a GUI option for it. I've enabled it myself since it might actually work well for my own workflow -- meaning I'll be testing it myself too.

    Re-reading my replies I still don't see how they were “rude”, but I do see that my suggested workaround would not work. It is possible to make it work using smart mailboxes, but it would be unreasonably complicated (requires the “is in” condition and some badly documented internal headers). I hope the preference above will work for you if you are still using MailMate.

    I might get an update out later today (no promises): Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the preferences pane to fetch it. You need r5324+ for this feature to be included.
