Counter format string unable to save

When editing the Counter Preferences:
Making changes to the format string does not make any discernible change in the menu-bar counter. The format string will remain persistently changed - but not the counter. I have tried de-selecting the 'in menu bar' check box to see if that re-freshes. No luck.

- State changed from “new” to “closed”
You have to hit “enter” to commit changes to the text field. Also note that each dot to the left represents a separate counter.
Let me know if this does not help.
(Some day I want to replace the Counters preferences pane by something else and therefore I'm not doing much to improve its shortcomings.)
