MAILMATE IMAP "Unexpected return code 535 (expected 235)"
Reported by Ian Baines | November 27th, 2015 @ 05:50 AM
I currently use MAILMATE and MACMAIL for specific emails but for the most part have the same BLUEHOST SMTP email assigned to all emails for both programs..
I am now receiving 2 error messages which have never occured in the past; one which tells me that
"Unexpected return code 535 (expected 235)"
which has then been followed up by:
Server response: “A0 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed.”. Command attempted: “A0 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN ••••••••••”.
THE A value goes up until i give up and reset the program/computer and try again.
Passwords are correct and saved. Logging though my BLUEHOST account and accessing and sending emails work correctly.
However, when i try sending mail using other email address using MACMAIL BUT using the SMTP setup by bluehost, i result in a similar error.
Sounds like BLUEHOST issue but came here first to be sure as WEBMAIL through BLUEHOST is currently working.

Since the problem is authentication then the problem is not related to which SMTP you use for a given account. Authentication should always work. But you also state it fails for Apple Mail and this is a clear indication that the problem is not MailMate.
Note that sending through webmail most likely means that no authentication is done with the SMTP server.
I suggest contacting Bluehost if you are sure the username/password is correct. Make sure you state that it doesn't work in Apple Mail.
Let me know if you think MailMate plays a part in the problem.
