[Feature request] pattern specification for gmail labels used as tags

Reported by fnurl | September 10th, 2015 @ 07:34 AM

I like that MailMate enables me to distinguish between Gmail labels that I use as folders, and Gmail labels that I use as tags. I have added my most obvious tags into MailMate, but when I add a new label via the Gmail web interface, I have to add it manually as a tag in MailMate.

I also use ActiveInbox in the Gmail web interface that leverages labels and stores due-dates in /ZD (e.g. /ZD/20150910) and has prefixes for statuses etc. Does it sound reasonable and doable to be able to be able to configure patterns for Gmail labels used as tags?

Using tag patterns would also make it easier to organize the label structure in Gmail so that the folder/tag distinction becomes visible in the web interface as well. I could e.g. have the following rules and have seamless sync between the Gmail web interface and MailMate:

"gmail tag patterns": ["/!*", "/#/*, "/C/*", "/ZD/*"]

This might pose problems for manually specified tags, but with the following checks this should not be a problem:

  • when adding a pattern, only allow the pattern if it does not match an existing tag
  • when adding a tag manually, only allow the tag if it is not matched by an existing pattern

Character icons for pattern tags would reasonably have to apply to all labels matched by the pattern, and IMAP keyword string would similarly have to be just derived without the possibility of customizing.

Perhaps a no-automatic-check version could be available as a hidden preference option with checks having to be made by the user and anything in the IMAP keyword field being ignored?
