Edit draft saved elsewhere

Reported by Thibaud | May 3rd, 2011 @ 08:54 AM

Hello !

To edit a draft saved in MailMate is ok.
However, it seems not to be possible to do the same with a draft saved elsewhere (webmail ...).

Am I the only one to have this problem?

Thank you :)

No, MailMate checks that it has created the message itself before
allowing it to be opened in the composer. The problem is that MailMate
may not support the same features as the client used to create the
message. This could easily result in the loss of text, in particular
because MailMate has no HTML editor which is often used by other clients
to save text in drafts (e.g., Apple Mail). And this is just the example
most important with regard to MailMate. Many other issues could arise
which could result in data loss.

The intention was also that the user should be able to either override
this limitation or be able to “Edit as New Message”. I thought the
latter was possible, but I can see that is not the case. A fix for this
    ticket should:

    • show a sheet warning about potential loss of data when double-clicking a non-MailMate draft – maybe just offering to create a new message
      based on the existing draft
    • not allow one to send drafts created by other clients (e.g. those from Apple Mail should not be sent in their Draft-style)

Thanks for making me aware of this issue.

Hello, I've havig this (draft created on iPad with Mail). Is it in the works to get this implemented? (It's a deal-breaker for me, unfortunately -- I spend my whole day collecting emails to do by starting them off as drafts and saving, to finish later).

No work has been done on this yet. You can help me by uploading an iPad draft message example (I don't have an iPad). You can send it privately (http://freron.com/contact) or change the email addresses before adding it to this ticket. I fear that it may be in a non-trivial Apple Mail format which is not easily converted to plain text, but I might be wrong.

(not managingto do this by email, that can wait...)

    I've attached the following:

    1) Draft message created on iPad mini OS 6.1 (16673.emi)
    2) Draft created with Mailmate, then edited with iPad mini and saved again. (166764.emi) (in next update - one file limit?)

It works to use method 2 but requires me to have created blank messages and saved as drafts for later editing (which is a decent but not foolproof workaround).

BBEdit seems to allow me to edit the one created on iPad mini and the local Mailmate sees the changes on relaunch but it doesn't get saved back up to the server. NB I did not edit this one, this is created for your testing.

Happy to provide more samples e.g. with cc addresses, other headers.

Thanks. These are surprisingly simple plain text emails (especially compared to Apple Mail on OS X). I'll note that I should at least look into allowing editing such simple drafts by non-MailMate email clients.

(I believe lighthouseapp allows multiple files using the green plus button to the left of the attachment.)

The behavior of MailMate in the next release:

    • Never allows drafts from other email clients to be sent.
    • Allows simple drafts from other email clients to be edited (like those generated by iOS). After that they can be sent.
    • Allows drafts from other email clients to be edited using “Message ▸ Edit as New Message...”

The last point can easily fail to provide something useful. This is partly because some email clients do non-standard stuff in their drafts. Improvements of this can be requested in new tickets.

I have only tested editing of plain text drafts with iOS 5 on an iPhone. Editing simple drafts appears to work both ways.

You can fetch a test version by holding down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane (r3333).

Hmh, strange. I have started a message in Apple Mail and saved the draft. Then I realized that it was in RTF and saved it again (with some additional text, so check if it gets synced) as plain text.

When I open the synced Draft in MailMate the composer is empty. When I forward it, I get the text, but have to edit several parts of the email again (recipient, ...). Is this the intended behaviour so far?
