Photos Share Menu Won't Invoke Mailmate

Reported by David Green | April 14th, 2015 @ 10:30 PM

If Apple Mail.app is the default mail application, the Photos share button will show Mail as an alternative for sharing a photo.

If Mailmate is the default mail application, the Photos share button won't show Mailmate as an alternative for sharing a photo.

(as an aside the ticket box says "Upload Quota Reached." please notify the account owner).

With Yosemite, Apple introduced a new system for sharing files, but so far it has not been used by many applications. So far, the Finder was the primary example and in this case MailMate offered an alternative via the Services menu which also works on older OS'es.

But Photos changes this. I'll take another look at what is needed to make this work.

The "Upload Quota Reached" is not caused by MailMate in any way. Not sure what that is about. (I know the Finder behaves strangely listing MailMate in its Share menu even though MailMate does not support it at all. Oh, that bug appears to have been fixed.)

Re Sharing, as additional information, I have since tried Microsoft Outlook and Mailplane App both of which, like Mailmate, do not work. This is not surprising given that everyone would be impacted by the Yosemite change.

Re "Upload Quota Reached" -- this is a Lighthouse message and may be associated with the MailMate account (Not program). I thought that might impact future file uploads into the ticketing system.

Sharing images from the "photos" app ist really annoying.
I have a (rather ugly) workaround, exporting the images to let's say the desktop and from there creating a new mail with attachment. Need to delete the photo after this...
Not very fine... any other ideas? Besides finding a way to share directly from "photos"?

It seems I've forgotten to update this ticket. I've implemented a so-called Share extension which should make Photos offer you to share with MailMate. You can fetch a test release like this: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.

Note that MailMate has to show a sharing sheet before creating the draft in MailMate. Apple Mail skips this step, but this is because Apple uses a private API which is not available to third party applications :-(
