migrate tags

Reported by Ingo Lantschner | February 10th, 2015 @ 04:58 PM

How can I migrate the tags of a mailbox together with the messages? So that I have all messages tagged again.

Just copy the file Tags.plist will not help (I guess) since I can not see any information which would connect the message to the tag.

Thanks and kind regards Ingo

Depending on the server, each tag should correspond to an IMAP keyword. In other words, the answer depends on what kind of migration you are trying to do. Copying the Tags.plist file ensures that the tag display names are the same on another machine.

Could you clarify what you mean by “migrate”?

I installed MailMate on a new machine (while the old one ist still in use) and configured the IMAP-Accounts on that new machine. This results in all mail being copied from the server to the new machine. But I am missing the tags on the new machine. In other words: The e-mail messages tagged on the old machine do not have the same tags (or any other tag) on the new machine.

By the way: The next question would be: Is it possible to keep the tags synced between multiple installations of MailMate for the same IMAP-account?

This is a sign that your IMAP server(s) do not support IMAP keywords (MS Exchange?). There is no easy way to migrate tags then…

One solution is to switch to an IMAP server which does support IMAP keywords. Moving messages to such an account should maintain the tags and make them “downloadable” by the other install of MailMate. But that might not be a viable solution.

If you use at most 1 tag for a given email then another solution could be to create an IMAP mailbox for each tag and move the emails to these mailboxes. Then you can re-tag them on the other machine, but if you move them again then the tags are logs on the original machine.

I'm sorry I cannot come up with a better solution.

Is it possible to warn if the user tries to use keywords but the server doesn't support it? In this context: how about an info panel where a table shows server and Mailmate features (with checks and crosses). Maybe this could be helbful – or at least satisfying for the nerd soul. :-)

Thanks benny for your explanation. No it's not MS Exchange but the server is out if my control. So I have to look for an other mail-provider.

Btw. wouldn't that be an interesting additional business for you, to provide IMAP accounts as a service, which conforms to the needs of MailMate? Preferably in a country with good privacy-laws, ... Just any idea.

    • State changed from “new” to “closed”

@Mike: MailMate could be better at reporting the capabilities of the server. Note though that even if the server claims to support IMAP keywords, there may be “hidden” limitations. I would essentially have to run a test on the server to know its real capabilities (the number of keywords supported).

@Ingo: There are people out there better at running servers than I am :-) Note that I've written about some alternatives here. I'm not affiliated with any of them.
