MailMate is IMAP only which implicitly means that it does not support POP3. Note that many POP3 providers allow you to forward emails to a different account, for example, an IMAP account. Alternatively, some IMAP providers (e.g., Gmail) allow you to fetch email from a POP3 account and put it in a specific IMAP mailbox within the IMAP account. This might require the email client to handle multiple email addresses within a single IMAP account. This is supported by MailMate.

    I hope this helps.

I just upgraded to Mavericks from an old Tiger Mac, and was very excited to try your MailMate to replace my aged Eudora. Unfortunately, I found it couldn't do the POP protocol.

While I love the idea that IMAP can help me manage emails across many devices, I am one that does not want my emails on someone else's machine for extended periods of time. Privacy is a lost art, it seems.

My Tiger Mac currently saves all my mail accounts locally in Eudora, then gives my portable devices 1 day to retrieve the accounts they are interested in before it deletes everything older than that off the server. If I could do that with a POP/IMAP combo that would be fine, but my Mac must be POP, at least until they enhance the IMAP protocol to allow such a process.

    So, feature request: Allow POP!

    Thanks

    • State changed from “new” to “bluesky”

@Wayne: I'll try to give my general answers on the whole POP3 issue, but the conclusion in the end is still going to be that this is a “bluesky” feature that I am most likely never going to implement. Sorry.

Requests for POP3 are typically motivated by one of the following:

    1. There is not enough storage space on the server.
    2. It is not safe to store emails on the server.
    3. An account is POP3 only on the server.

    My (short) answers are:

    1. Increase the storage or get an IMAP server elsewhere for long term storage.
    2. Disregarding that this makes it sound like the server is not trustworthy for transmission of messages at all, this can just as well be handled via IMAP if the email client allows you to move emails to local storage (MailMate doesn't, but that is a different issue).
    3. My initial reply in this ticket suggests using an IMAP service which can fetch POP3 emails and put them in IMAP mailboxes in an existing account, but this point is actually the only thing that could, theoretically, make me implement POP3: To fetch emails via POP3 and put them in an IMAP mailbox.

I'm sorry to disappoint (and for the late answer).
