Mailmate crashed

Reported by Lorraine Goodman | December 6th, 2014 @ 08:38 AM

Hi Benny

Mailmate keeps crashing, I get the following message:

Message body for msg id 137974 not found (Messages/IMAP/somewhatlimited@imap.gmail.com/[Google Mail].mailbox/Bin.mailbox/Messages/

If I can find the message on my computer somewhere, can I delete it and that will solve the problem or
is it more complicated than that.
Thanks
Lorraine Goodman
p.s. I never seem to be able to find a way to tell you an issue is resolved.

the problem seems suddenly to have cleared itself, Mailmate operating normally now. But would I have been able to
find the message and delete it? Thanks Lorraine Goodman

It doesn't look like a problem that would resolve itself. And no, it was not a “simple” problem of deleting a message. It is kind of the opposite. MailMate was unable to locate a message on disk which should be there.

    Two explanations come to mind:

    1. A MailMate bug somehow triggered the email to be deleted locally (or corrupted some database index file).
    2. The user or another app deleted the message locally.

With respect to item 2, I've had several reports where it turned out to be antivirus software which put messages into quarantine. This does not work well with MailMate and is actually very tricky to handle gracefully without introducing some kind of infinite loop.

With respect to item 1, I am of course interested in anything you can tell about what led up to this state.

I would assume that trying to view the message in MailMate would still trigger the same warning. The only solution is to rebuild the database, but if the problem is item number 2 then it's not going to solve it since the antivirus software is going to “steal” the email again. In that case you need to tell it to skip this folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/

It should be safe, because attachments in emails are still going to be found by the antivirus software when they are saved to this folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Attachments/

(Although I'm not quite sure how well MailMate handles that such files disappear immediately after being saved.)

    I hope this helps.

I don't think it will be an anti virus software, I don't have it set up to work that way.
I did go to the gmail account and delete the day's only incoming message to that account. But I did try and restart around half a dozen times after that before all returned to normal. Thanks for your help

Ok, let me know if the problem returns.
