Gmail Attachment too big Error.

Reported by Sean Cota | December 3rd, 2014 @ 06:49 PM

The following is an error I get when trying to migrate emails from one server to the next. I relates to the attachment being to large. The problem with MailMate is that when it get's to this point with the error, it doesn't skip this email and continue with the rest. It seems to be a slow acting infinite loop.

MailMate encountered the following error: “Server response: “I9 BAD [ALERT] Message too large. http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?answer=8770”.”.
Mailbox: “INBOX”.

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”

The IMAP error BAD [ALERT] only tells MailMate that a serious problem occurred and the user should be alerted. (The “Message too large” part is only for human eyes.) In other words, MailMate doesn't really know that the issue is that the message is too big.

If you can locate the message then you can delete it permanently (or put it in an offline mailbox). There is no way it can be uploaded to the server.

When MailMate gets a BAD error when trying to upload a message then I guess MailMate could/should offer to cancel the move (if it was moved). It's more tricky if the user has created a large message since then there is nowhere to move it (nothing to cancel).

This is the error that I get when executing from Terminal via command line:

Unfortunately, I don’t know where it is in the process. I only know that the inbox is trying to sync.

Do as follows to get more information:

    • Select the Inbox.
    • Enable the “Size” column for the messages outline.
    • Enable the “UID” column for the messages outline.
    • Enable the “Msg ID” column for the messages outline.

If you sort by “Size” then you'll get an idea about which messages are large. If you sort by UID then you'll get an idea about which messages have not been uploaded yet (those with no UID). If you sort by “Msg ID” then (I think) you'll see how far MailMate is in the process (when looking for empty UID values).

    I hope this helps.
