Email not sent

Reported by Matthew Beale | November 4th, 2014 @ 07:12 PM

After 48 hours I realized several emails had failed to send from my client. I found them in the drafts folder.

I normally send emails with the command-shift-d key combo, but now I cannot seem to send an email with that combo or buy clicking the send message button, nor can I flush and send these existing emails. When I tell them to send, they open to be edited. If I send from there, they simply appear a second time in drafts.

Maybe I'm missing a setting? This is unfortunate.

Mail server logs seem to agree that no smtps connections have been made for over 24 hours

I understand your frustration. I assume it worked before 48 hours ago. Yesterday I had a similar report from a user for which a system API suddenly claims the server is always unreachable. I cannot be sure your issue is related to this, but in case it is then you can try this test release. It simply always tries to send no matter what the system says about the reachability of the server. Note that this is a 64 bit test release and there may be other issues although I'm not currently aware of anything serious.

If it doesn't work then I'd like to see your SMTP settings. Did anything change with respect your network connection 48 hours ago?

No settings were changed. I have been on some crappy wifi networks and not rebooted in a while, though I've restarted mailmate. I'll reboot before trying the test build.

The oldest email in the inbox had a <150K PDF attached. Maybe that was related? I've cleared the messages and will experiment this afternoon.

That's still a relatively small email. I don't think that plays a part in this. The crappy wifi networks are more likely to be the problem.

Oof. Yeah a reboot of my computer resulted in a working send button. Kind of spooky that I need to distrust the send button.

Can I send any information now or start tracking anything specific later if this occurs again?

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

If it's never happened for you before then it may be unlikely to happen often enough to be able to debug it. The best you can do for now is probably to add a “sent message” sound in the Composer preferences pane.

If it does happen “regularly” then I can provide some debug instructions.

Now that I think about it, a quick improvement could be to make the drafts mailbox counter red whenever there are messages in the mailbox waiting to be sent due to connection issues. It would then also be red if the computer is offline, but that would probably not be a problem.

I'm having the same issue! No emails will send. All get stuck in Drafts with Pending Submission. This is happening across 2 domains I own hosted with Runbox, 4 Gmail accounts, and one iCloud account. All was well until about 48 hours ago. I have even restarted my Mac and had no change.

@Tom: Try pasting the following in a Terminal window:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugSend -bool YES

Then launch MailMate from the Terminal like this:

    /Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate

That should log part of what MailMate does when looking for messages to send. Maybe that'll provide a hint.

I assume you have no idea what changed 48 hours ago?

Unfortunately I tried the restart again before I saw this message, just to make sure. And now Mailmate works. I ran the above in terminal, and the logs look fine. Bummer. I'll save this tho. Thanks!
