  I don't think you can do this. It's a tricky problem which requires MailMate to select the from/to address based on knowledge about which addresses belong to you.

  I'm not even sure what could be changed to make this work other than some general system for defining virtual headers. In your case, this could be used to define a “Correspondent Address” virtual header which has the value of the first address in From/To/Cc which is not a personal address.

  I'll put this ticket in the “accepted” state, because I always like generalized solutions to specific problems, but it's currently far from a high priority.

  I don't think this would require any knowledge of which e-mail addresses belong to me. What would be sufficient is to make a sub-mailbox for every e-mail address involved in any of the e-mails in the mailbox. So, for instance, if you had:

  To: Mr. A
  From: Ms. B
  CC: Mr. C, Ms. D

  and:

  To: Ms. D
  From: Mr. A
  CC: Mr. E, Ms. B

  you'd have five sub-mailboxes, one each for Mr. A through Mr. E. The e-mails would appear in multiple mailboxes as appropriate. The contents of each sub-mailbox would be as follows:

  Mr. A: E-mail 1 and e-mail 2
  Ms. B: ditto
  Mr. C: E-mail 1 only
  Ms. D: E-mail 1 and e-mail 2
  Mr. E: E-mail 2 only

  Yes, such a solution would not require knowledge about your addresses. It would instead require that MailMate could let a single message be part of multiple submailboxes. This is not currently the case, but this is a feature also needed for Tags and therefore more likely to be implemented :-)

  If it worked then you should use the virtual header named “Any-Address” (if I remember correctly) to do it. But that won't currently work correctly.

  @Mike: No progress yet. Note that the current behaviour is not “by design”. Submailboxes are an advanced feature for which I originally missed the importance of handling multi-value headers. Changing this is not a quick fix and the feature competes with hundreds of other issues. Nevertheless, I haven't actually checked in detail exactly how hard it would be to fix this. I can at least promise you to do that :-)

  (By the way, I don't really agree that MailMate, in general, forces the user to work in a particular way. There are missing features and half-baked features, but flexibility is at the core of MailMate. You wouldn't believe the number of different email work patterns I've been asked to support and I really don't know any email client which is even close to being able to do that.)

  @Mike: Turns out that some changes I had done for the 64 bit beta of MailMate fixed half of the problem. The messages are correctly distributed into submailboxes, but the names of the mailboxes were “incorrect”. I've almost implemented the solution to this half of the problem and I believe I can promise this issue is fixed in the next update.

  There has been one unexpected side effect, however. The number of sub-mailboxes expanded to a huge amount. I traced most of these to a few e-mails from a contrator whose AOL account was hacked and used in mass mailings with super-long cc fields. After I deleted and emptied the trash on those e-mails, things shrunk quite a bit. Bit I still have a lot of sub-mailboxes for people who were incidentally cc'd on e-mails, people who are not in the "Any Address > Address - is - ______" list.

  I also have various misspelled e-mail addresses showing up, as cc's to e-mails that I do not want to delete.
