Markdown pre not escaping

I am trying to send code in an email and can't get inline pre Markdown to render. Doing thing:
`<some_tag>`
Should result in:
<code><some_tag></code>
But ends up showing nothing; I assume that MailMate isn't escaping the code properly. For the moment I have had to add a space after the first < to get it to render anything.
