Gmail and invalid credentials
Reported by Tobias J | January 6th, 2014 @ 03:21 PM
Hello.
I am trying to add a Google Apps account to MailMate. I already have one Gmail account setup so I essentially mirrored the the settings (obviously changing the user name and email address).
I have managed to create the account without issues, but when I
try to take the account online I receive the following
response:
"A1 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials (Failure)".
Command attempted: "A1 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN
••••••••••"
It looks like I have entered something wrong, but I've triple
checked the information and it is correct.
Could this be due to the fact that my institution uses their own
login page?
If I am attempting to log in through the standard Gmail interface,
I can just enter my email address and Google redirects me to the my
university's login page (which does not use the email address, but
rather a special ID). Or I can use a special URL where I enter my
ID and password and it redirects me to Gmail.

I don't really know if there is anything special for a Google account like yours (I know MailMate has other Google Apps users). Does it work in any other email clients?
If you know how to use the Terminal then you can connect manually like this:
openssl s_client -crlf -connect imap.gmail.com:993
Then you can try to login like this:
0 LOGIN username password
If that works then it should also work in MailMate.

Well, it is working in iOS' Mail.app. Then it hit me that the password for mail access (via IMAP/SMTP/POP) is required to be different from the password of my ID, but I pretty much never enter it since I always used to log on through the special page my institution provides.
After entering the correct password, it worked as it should. I guess this can be closed. -
