Benny,
I posted this in the mailing list, but I'm re-opening this issue as
the behavior described in ticket #387 has
returned.
If I try to escape the underscore characters (This_is_a_test), I'll
end up with the backslashes in the output. If I don't put the
backslashes in, I'll get Thisisatest (with italics present).
Using the latest b3816.

If my mailing list reply is correct in the analysis of the problem then it is fixed for the next update. It was a bit more tricky than expected since MailMate has to re-introduce the escape characters when editing an old draft.
