Archive Folder

Reported by Ralph Alvy | September 8th, 2013 @ 03:34 PM

I see that Archive folder in my folder tree. I have never used such a folder in my decades of using IMAP. What are people using it for? I do not use Gmail, if that's relevant. I use a third party IMAP server (tuffmail.com). Not sure I ever saw such a folder there until I installed MailMate.

The “Archive” folder is part of a very simple approach to handling email. A message arrives in the Inbox and when it's been taken care of then you'll simply archive it. Gmail is relevant in the sense that it was probably Gmail that popularized this approach (although it works differently in their interpretation of IMAP), but other email clients also use it now.

You don't need to use it. By default MailMate shows a universal Archive mailbox, but the corresponding IMAP mailboxes are not created unless you actually archive a message. A future version of MailMate might allow you to remove the universal mailbox, but it's currently not possible.

    Does that answer your question?
