Archiving single message via toolbar archives all messages in thread

Reported by Martin | May 23rd, 2013 @ 11:25 PM

Let's say that I have 5 emails in my inbox, two of which are from the same conversation. EG:

  1. From: AAA@example.com || Subject: random
  2. From: BBB@example.com || Subject: Re:Test
  3. From: CCC@example.com || Subject: blur
  4. From: BBB@example.com || Subject: Re:Test
  5. From: DDD@example.com || Subject: data

it is normal for me to only keep the latest email of a conversation in the inbox, as it keeps it clean, and hence the natural behaviour in the above situation would be to archive email number 4, as email number 2 is a more recent one in the conversation.

Archiving mail 4 via the archive the toolbar button also archives mail 2. Via shortcut (command-shift-M) it would archive only mail 4.

It seems that archiving archives all mails in a conversation, regardless of which one is selected.

    If I understand you correctly you see different behavior of the “Archive” toolbar button and the Archive menu item (via shortcut ⇧⌘M)? I cannot reproduce that.

    Does it matter that you have 5 messages? Does the same happen if you just have 2 messages of the same thread?

    I assume you have “View ▸ Organize by Thread” disabled?

    Which layout are you using (View ▸ Layout)?

    The general rule in MailMate is: Only the selected message is moved except if it is collapsed.

    Hi,

    Yes.

    I am not sure what would happen if I only had two messages in the inbox… it's kinda impossible for me to try though :D

    I have it enabled! However, I only browse browse the inbox, and hence threading only really kicks in in things such as mailing lists, as when I send a message it "breaks" the tread due to the email not being in the inbox but instead of in the "sent" folder.

    Which layout are you using (View ▸ Layout)?

    "correspondance"

    The general rule in MailMate is: Only the selected message is moved except if it is collapsed.

    This is what I would have expected, and this is how command-shift-M works, but if I press the "archive" button it also moves unselected, yet loosely connected messages.

    If you can't reproduce still, I can perhaps make screenshots.

    I can reproduce it now.

    Notice that the correspondence outline is also threaded and in this context the message could be collapsed since sent messages are pulled in. If the focus is in the correspondence outline then both messages are moved.

    One solution is that you disable threading for the correspondence outline. Another is that you make sure you are aware of the current focus.

    I'm not sure how this could be improved. I guess I could change the behavior when MailMate can see that the same message is selected in the two outlines, but that would be an ugly hack.
