  The threading of messages is currently unrelated to the use of Re:, but is based on the Message-ID and In-Reply-To headers. Please find two messages which you think should be parent/child and provide me with the Message-ID and In-Reply-To headers (if you know how). Alternatively send the messages directly to me (there is a feedback menu item under the Help menu).

  I do plan to break the threading when the body of the subject changes and that would currently not work correctly with an AW: prefix which is not identified as a prefix. I also know that some clients (probably Outlook as well) use Sv: in Danish. The standard (RFC 5322) only specifies Re: which is “an abbreviation of the Latin "in re", meaning "in the matter of"”.

  I'll do some research on what kind of prefixes exist in the wild and try to improve the specifier for subject prefixes, but it should be unrelated to the threading problem you described.

  I found the following short list of abbreviations. It seems to indicate that 2-letter abbreviations are the norm:

  My search also revealed messages with a mix of abbreviations such as 'Re: Sv: AW: Subject'.

  I should have checked the code base first. I already allow any 2-letter abbreviation and not just “Re”. MailMate should, for example, be able to handle “Re: Aw: Re[3]: Sv: Subject” such that if replying, it is only going to be “Re: Subject”.

  The only problem is if “Fwd:” is used. That is currently not handled well. For now I'll just extend it to allow 3-letter abbreviations, but I'm not sure that if replying to a subject such as “Fwd: Subject” that one wants to strip the “Fwd” before adding “Re“ (a quick check shows that Apple Mail does that).

  • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

  The original problem in this thread was caused by the messages not being directly related as parent/child. MailMate does not currently display such messages together if the message(s) in-between are not part of the currently displayed mailbox.
