Mailmate freezes on launch

Mailmate starting becoming unresponsive on my M3 MacBook running Sonoma 14.5. I have to force quit and even then reopening it has teh same result - a spinning beachball and bing unresponsive. Restarting the Mac didn't help, as didn't reinstalling the latest beta from Jan 2023.
When I looked at Activity Monitor it was using 57% of my CPU time and almost all of the memory in my M3 Max with 36GB. It would start a a low value and slowly increase the amount used. For example, it went from a few MB to almost 4 GB in less than a minute. Eventually I get a memory low system alert.
