Mails with SpamSieve score less than specified threshold not being marked Not Junk

Reported by Sanchit | December 5th, 2021 @ 11:14 PM

I'm using the beta release of MailMate (updated via Option+Check Now) with SpamSieve on macOS Monterey. I've set a threshold of 10 in the Security tab to mark messages as Not Junk.

I received emails in both Gmail & Outlook where the email was moved to Spam by the server filter, but since I had set the All / Junk / Deleted mailbox as the one where SpamSieve should run, it's also filtering the server filter's mail. I confirmed from SpamSieve's log that these were evaluated (scores of 1 & 4) but I found them in the respective Junk mailboxes of Gmail & Outlook.

  1. The messages were not marked as "Not Junk" and there was no "Move out of Junk" button visible. I marked them as Not Junk and then moved them out via the button which became visible afterwards.
  2. I assumed that this threshold setting also moves the message from Junk to Inbox, is that the case ? I didn't find anything in the manual for either MailMate or SpamSieve but I found a twitter thread from 2020 where this was being discussed, is this moving out of Junk currently implemented ?

This happened again with a score 1 email, it seems the mails are getting marked as Not Junk since a gray bar appears which only has the "Mark as Junk" button. The orange bar with "Move out of Junk" button only appears when the email's explicitly not marked as Junk. Which means the flag is reset when I select Junk State > Not Junk again on an email which is already set as Not Junk ?

For now I've created a Smart Mailbox with a "Not Junk" tag condition to filter these emails.

You should not run SpamSieve on “All / Junk / Deleted”. Only run it on mailboxes with incoming emails, most often that is just the Inbox.

For debugging, you might want to use “Message ▸ Reset” to imitate that an email arrives again in the Inbox.

You can see the spam score by using the “SpamSieve Score” column in the message list.

Why do you recommend to not run SpamSieve on "All / Junk / Deleted", will it break or cause some undefined behaviour ? I've kept my server spam filters ON and have SpamSieve filter the messages locally and along with Inbox, I want to run SpamSieve on all the messages which the server marked as Junk so I can rescue important emails. I don't delete emails, so I haven't seen the Deleted Messages folder behaviour but so far the SpamSieve filtering has been running fine with "All / Junk / Deleted" and SpamSieve gets to run & train on all my email, even the messages arriving in non-Inbox folders due to server rules.

Also, is there a plan to implement moving emails to Inbox/any folder (in addition to marking as Non-Junk) for a given SpamSieve threshold ?
