Emails returning to "Junk" after being marked as "Not Junk"

Reported by Rich Siegel | November 8th, 2021 @ 03:48 PM

My system: MailMate/5844/24042BBA-5F05-5445-93A8-6C9BB5E60E6A 12.0.1/arm64/MacBookPro18,4/10

Also encountered using: MailMate/5673/24042BBA-5F05-5445-93A8-6C9BB5E60E6A 10.16.0/x86_64/MacBookPro18,4/10

I'm using SpamSieve with MailMate, and some emails (from a new correspondent) got misfiltered into "Junk".

I selected all of the misfitered messages in the list, then used the "Move Out of Junk" context menu item to move those items back to the in box; under previous versions of macOS (I was using 10.15.7 before upgrading to 12.0.1) this also marked them as "Not Junk".

Ever since then, those same messages keep getting moved back into "Junk". When I click on one of them, there's an orange (in 5844) banner which reads: "The message is in a Junk folder, but it's not explicitly marked as Junk." There's a "Mark as Junk" button, and a "Move Out of Junk" button.

When I click the "Move Out of Junk" button, the messages move back to the inbox, but subsequently I see that they've been moved back into Junk. (I haven't been able to identify the point at which this happens. I think the messages get moved back into Junk when new mail arrives in the inbox.)

I thought maybe if I used the contextual menu to explicitly mark the messages as "Not Junk" and then used the "Move Out of Junk" button (or contextual menu item) to put the messages back in the in box, that might correct the issue, but it does not seem to have succeeded -- the same messages end up back in "Junk".

I'm not sure how to diagnose or resolve this, but I'll be happy to provide any information you need that might help.

    To follow up on this:

    I just had it happen again, an email landed in Junk and shows the "The message is in a Junk folder, but it's not explicitly marked as Junk" banner.

    I checked SpamSieve's log. For the email in question, it says:

    Predicted: Good (1)
    Subject: Thanksgiving Orders
    From: admin@carriageinndining.com
    Identifier: FNwPGEu1gW8YXn1j7oxk1g==
    Reason: (
    "admin@carriageinndining.com" ) matched rule in SpamSieve whitelist Date: 2021-11-08 12:27:08 -0500 (EST)

    When I clicked the "Move Out of Junk" button, SpamSieve's log added:

    Trained: Good (Manual)
    Subject: Thanksgiving Orders
    From: admin@carriageinndining.com
    Identifier: FNwPGEu1gW8YXn1j7oxk1g==
    Actions: added to Good corpus (26787)
    Date: 2021-11-08 12:27:43 -0500 (EST)

    And yet this email is landing in Junk after getting moved back to the Inbox.

    Update: this may be a Layer 8 issue. Turns out, I had left MailMate running on another computer (also filtering with SpamSieve). So I think this was a case of user error leading to conflicting spam filtering.

    I've quit the "other" MailMate and will update this ticket after I've been running for a while.
