unable to trigger rule manually

I have created a rule that moves messages in my Archive folder based on the "Date-Received" virtual header.
It works well for messages that I archive now: They get moved to the Archive folder and do trigger the rule.
Running the rule manually on selected or all messages in the folder does not appear to trigger the rule.
Moving messages out of the Archive folder to the Inbox and then archiving them again does trigger the rule.
Is manually triggering the rule broken?
