  Tried the brute force approach:
  - removed MailMate - hid the old application support folder in Library - reinstalled and re-synced

  Looks like it's good now; I'll be a little more careful cleaning up the old folders next time.

  I'm sorry for the inconvenience of this problem. The (secondary) problem is that some servers limit the number of messages which can be copied using a single IMAP command. The primary problem is that MailMate does not handle this well since it is not obvious how to cancel the move (it is possible to take the account offline and then move the messages back). Another user had a similar problem and the next release of MailMate has a limit on the number of messages involved in a single IMAP command. This would probably have worked for you as well.

  It may seem strange that messages are moved when you rename a folder/mailbox. This is because IMAP does not really support renaming mailboxes. You can only create a new mailbox, move the messages from the old mailbox to the new mailbox, and finally delete the old mailbox. It is still fairly efficient to do this since moving messages is fast (for most servers). The main problem is if you have multiple email clients using the IMAP server. The other email clients are just going to see that a mailbox disappeared and a new mailbox was created. A client with offline support like MailMate is then going to delete all of the messages in the old mailbox and then fetch all messages in the new mailbox. This is slow.

  I should probably also explain why messages seem to be copied instead of moved. This is simply how IMAP works. There is no move command. It is only possible to copy and then delete. It is not as inefficient as it may sound since IMAP servers (the good ones) do not really copy the messages.
