The “Synchronize All” menu item synchronizes all mailboxes of all accounts. How/when do you use this feature? I'm just trying to understand the use case since a different solution may be better.

Note that all mailboxes are currently regularly checked for changes and changes in INBOX'es are detected immediately.

The use case? Every time you expect a new email in you inbox, e.g. you entered you email adress on some website and expect an email to be delivered right after that (like password reset etc.).

The Apple Mail.app calls this toolbar button "Get new messages in all accounts" and it is the left most button of the default toolbar.

In general, I would much appreciate that an app offers most of the actions that are available from the menu also via (optional) toolbar buttons, Toolbar buttons have a great advantage over Menu or Contextual Menu and even Shortcuts. You can click on the toolbar button even if the app is not active, anything else requires you to first activate the application and then perform the action, so its always a 2 (or more) step procedure, while a toolbar button allows you to instantly perform the action (if the window is visible).

The reason I asked for a use case was to see if you used the feature in an unexpected way (you didn't). In your case, the “Synchronize All” menu item should not have any effect. On the contrary, it may delay the arrival of the message. The reason is that all INBOX'es are monitored using the so-called IDLE extension. There are some servers which do not support this extension, but they are rare. With an IDLE connection to the server, MailMate is informed as soon as a message arrives.

In any case, what you need is an action which only synchronizes the INBOX'es. “Synchronize All” checks for changes in all mailboxes which can be an expensive action if you have many mailboxes. Users with server-side filtering do have the problem you describe, i.e., they need better control of when these mailboxes are synchronized.

So, in other words, for an IMAP email client, a “Get new messages” button makes little sense for most users. If implemented it should probably be in a way such that the user could specify which mailboxes should actually be checked for new messages and any INBOX'es (or other mailboxes with IDLE connections) should automatically be skipped. But I'm still thinking about how to improve synchronization in general (other users have had some advanced requests for detailed control of when and how to synchronize).

With respect to toolbar buttons, you are welcome to make specific requests. As you might have guessed I rarely use it myself ;-)

    • State changed from “new” to “closed”

I am closing this old ticket. Note that it is now possible to put more mailboxes in the IDLE state (named “Connected” in the Synchronization Schedule option for any IMAP mailbox). Such mailboxes should report new messages immediately if the server behaves correctly.

I've noted the request for additional toolbar buttons elsewhere.
