Feature request: open parent of current message in a new window
Reported by John Y | February 15th, 2019 @ 11:40 AM
Currently, if I want to view a message's parent, I must select it in the message list and use the Thread Arcs layout.
If a message is not currently selected in the message list, but is open in its own window, I can use Message > Go to Source to select it in the message list, and then use the Thread Arcs layout. But this has the disadvantage that I lose my place in the message list, and have to spend time scrolling around to get back to where I was.
If I'm not using the Thread Arcs layout, I need to switch it manually and then switch back.
Please could we have a command which opens the parent of the current message in a new window, without requiring changing the selection in the message list, or changing the layout of the message list?
A simple way would be to display the In-Reply-To: header in the header list — clicking the Message-ID could then open that message in a new window.
But there's no GUI for customising the header list. I tried to customise headersFormatting.plist, but couldn't see what to put to get that header — is there a list of variables anywhere?
All of these options to be a lot of hassle to simply open the parent of the current message, though. Could we have Open Source as well as Go to Source, please — or a preference to govern how Go to Source behaves?
Thanks

I think it would make sense to have “File ▸ Open Parent Message” in addition to “File ▸ Open Message”, e.g., using ⌥⌘O as default shortcut (and an
openParentMessage:
key binding selector for custom key bindings).Note that the “Show Thread” toolbar button might be helpful. It should also work in the single message window (you need to customize the toolbar to add it).
