Can't delete Exchange calendar message from Inbox

Reported by Aaron Arndt | January 31st, 2019 @ 12:45 AM

I have two emails in my inbox that I cannot delete or move to a different folder. There are titled "Retrieval using the IMAP4 protocol failed," and have a sender of "Microsoft Exchange Server 2010." I am accessing an Exchange account that lets me use IMAP. I have been using this account since I purchased MailMate in November 2018. I am familiar with these types of messages appearing in my account, but they usually do not appear in my Inbox, only the "Calendar" folder in the account. So, this is the first time I have seen them in my Inbox and it seems odd that I cannot do anything to the emails themselves.

What's weirder is that the emails do NOT show up in my inbox on either my iPhone or when viewing my account on the web.

How do I get rid of these emails!? Thanks.

You are correct that such messages are normally in the Calendar or similar Microsoft-only folder. It's a mystery why they are exposed over IMAP and the best way to handle them is to use “Edit Subscriptions” in the IMAP account editor.

I don't know how they got into your Inbox, but I can see that it's a problem. I recently added that MailMate cannot move/delete these emails, because I've had a few cases of users deleting them (which is surprisingly allowed by the server) messing up their contacts and/or calendar items.

I'm not sure how to best handle this. The best I've come up with for now is to allow you to disable the non-deletion code like this:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDisableExchangeSafetyCatch -bool YES

I don't have a release for you yet where this works, but I'll update this ticket when I do.

You might want to check that the email(s) are really in the mailbox. You can do this by enabling the UID column in the message list (the email must have a UID). I'm not surprised that webmail doesn't show it, but I would have expected it to appear in iPhone Mail.

    (Sorry about the late response.)
