You add it to the Email Address(es) field of the IMAP account (comma-separated list). If it needs a custom name then you can add this too. For example, something like this:
primary@example.com, "Secondary Name" <secondary@example.com>
Let me know if that does not help.

Yes, I just figured that out :)
But ow I need to know how to make this a permanent choice and not something I need to select each time. I understand that once you send a particular address it then defaults to that choice but I don't want to have to do this every time for new recipients.

If I understand correctly, that would be:
"Secondary Name" <secondary@example.com>, primary@example.com
And maybe the Default Account setting in the Composer preferences pane although this is not currently used much (sending account is derived from previously sent emails or other context).

Sorry but still unclear...
You mean I enter that string in the "email adresses" for the IMPAP account setting.....brackets include?
-
Steven Miller January 27th, 2019 @ 01:33 PM
I just want to use a different ReplyTo address for all messages from that account....ordinarily understood to be an "Alias"

As it stands, when I add the desired address to the line after the primary, I still have to choose it each time

Yes, it's for the “Email Addresses” field. See more here.
The point was that I swapped the addresses such that the secondary address was the first on the line. The first one should be the one chosen by default by MailMate.

Maybe I am just thick but nothing I try works....I added:
My Name myname@myname.com, myname@gmail.com
to that line but whatever I do, unless the first line has the primary gmail address as the first in the list, I get a box asking me to input a non-existing password. In other words, the app seems to want the same address as used for the server to be the first in that list.
I also tried without brackets with same result.

Ah, if you add it to the “Email Address(es)” field as the first item then you might need to tell MailMate to use the Gmail address as username for IMAP/SMTP. It won't make the right guess if the first email address isn't the account Gmail address.
That said, note that Gmail is pretty strict about what you can use as your From header. You might need to use a non-Google SMTP server to send emails.

Now I am really confused....if I don't add it first, then it won't be the default replyto address even though already have the gmail address as the user name.
no offense but it shouldn't be this hard....in Apple Mail you just pick from a list of addresses in Preferences|Accounts| Account information and it just works....I can't believe I would have to use another SMPT server just to use an alias. Are you sure we are talking about the same thing? Justfor clarity :
My real email account is a Gmail account but I have a domain name that I use for my email that forwards to gmail. I want to use that domain:
as my default replyto address for ALL emails.
and yes, I send all the time from this domain using gmail servers

You are right that it shouldn't be this hard. It's a fairly recent feature of MailMate that the account settings (IMAP/SMTP) are derived from the primary email address. I had not considered your use case.
If you always send from the secondary address then I think this is what you need:
Email Address(es): myname@myname.com IMAP hostname: imap.gmail.com IMAP username: myname@gmail.com SMTP hostname: smtp.gmail.com SMTP username: myname@gmail.com
With respect to SMTP, if Google knows that myname@myname.com is your address then it might work to use their SMTP server. I cannot recall what exactly they allow. I do know that if you use a From address that they don't like then it doesn't fail to send. Instead they silently replace the From address with your Gmail address.

(Sorry about the irregular responses. I'm in transit with very flaky internet.)

The above doesn't work as it tries to connect to a non-existing IMAP server. It is, however, what I would have expected to work and how it works on other services. I don't know why the "Email Address" line should be pointing to the IMAP server as this seems duplicative of the IMAP setting which follows. As far as this
"if you use a From address that they don't like then it doesn't fail to send. Instead they silently replace the From address with your Gmail address."
maybe but it is not my experience with Apple Mail or any of your competitors, all of which alowl for a simple alias to be input as a default email address.
Look, I would really like to be able to use the app, especially because it supports SIME encryption (not important at the moment) but with the inability to use an alias as a default reply to address, I can't . I would certainly consider switching back if this was fixed and/or if SIME encryption becomes once again important to me.
Thanks however for the fast support.

Non-existing IMAP server? That certainly makes no sense for
imap.gmail.com
. If you have another email client that works, could you send me a screenshot of your settings using the address seen when using “Help ▸ Send Feedback” within MailMate? I'd like to be able to reproduce it.The use of the email address for IMAP/SMTP settings is just a convenience. If the user has a plain Gmail address then the rest is not needed since it can be derived from that address. If the user has custom settings (like you) then explicit IMAP/SMTP settings are needed. (I'm not saying this couldn't work better.)
Google rewriting the From address does not have anything to do with MailMate. It'll happen for any email client using
smtp.gmail.com
. If it works for your custom address then there is no problem, but that is not always the case -- therefore I thought it would be nice of me to warn you of this caveat.MailMate is very flexible with respect to using numerous aliases for a single account. Automatically deriving which one to use in all kinds of scenarios (it can often be hard to figure out which one to use based on an incoming email). I'm sorry it's not sufficient in your case and I would like to understand what fails in order to be able to fix it.
Thanks for trying out MailMate.

"Non-existing IMAP server?"
Meaning its trying to connect to server at myname@myname.com when my actual IMPAP server is nyname@gmail.com.
"If you have another email client that works, could you send me a screenshot of your settings using the address seen when using “Help ▸ Send Feedback” within MailMate?"
Done....all they are are selections from the app settings
" If the user has custom settings (like you) then explicit IMAP/SMTP settings are needed. (I'm not saying this couldn't work better.)"
I understand.....perhaps a simple "default email address" box would fix that?

I sent you the examples......basically with Apple Mail and so many other mail apps, you just create an alias and then select it as the default email address and it works with gmail with no problems, at least none that I have experience. That way each message for the account has the alias set as the default account for all new messages.
I hope you can work this out
best

I'd like to not clutter the interface by having both a text field and a popup. The text field cannot both be used for default IMAP/SMTP settings and to specify primary address. The popup (and GUI for editing addresses) is a bit cumbersome for users with many aliases. I'll give it some thought...
For now, with the Gmail settings based on your @gmail.com address, you need to explicitly enter
imap.gmail.com
,smtp.gmail.com
, and the displayed usernames. After that, you can enter your other address as the first one in “Email Address(es)” and the other values should no longer change. It believe that should work. (MailMate could do this automatically when adding a second email address to the list of email addresses. That might be a solution.)If you have time, could you see if the above works for you?
