Set default layout for message view?

Is there a way to set the default layout for message view? If not, could this be added, or MailMate simply remember the last message view layout used?
I have added a new message view layout in ~/Library/Application\ Support/MailMate/Resources/Layouts/Message/ (which adds thread arcs and some additional headers). When viewing a message I am able to select this view layout. However, MailMate always opens messages with the "Standard" view layout selected.
By contrast, MailMate appears to remember the last view layout used for the Mailboxes view.
