Mailmate quits before I can do anything

Reported by Edwin Willems | November 1st, 2018 @ 08:34 AM

Since a couple of days, I've an internet connection that runs over 4G (through my iPhone) (not sure whether this is relevant, but it's since problems started).
- the first few days, I received the error message shown in attachment (had to resynchronize). I could still work, but got this message often - since yesterday, I can't run Mailmate anymore. When I start it, it starts synchronizing my mailboxes (see the spinning symbols), but before he's done, he quits Mailmate (without any indication of error).

Can you pls advice what I should do?
Thanks,
Edwin Willems

Can't upload pictures - it says "Upload QUota reached - Please notify the account owner").

The internet connection shouldn't matter (at least in theory).

    1. Try the latest test release to make sure it's not a fixed issue: https://updates.mailmate-app.com/archives/MailMate_r5549.tbz

    2. I believe I've found the crash reports related to your crashes. It does not look like something I've fixed. It appears that MailMate has trouble parsing a message before deleting it from database indexes. This is a bit strange because it should then also have happened when the message was added to MailMate. But maybe it has somehow become corrupted. In any case, it shouldn't crash. If it persists after step 1 then I'd like to create a debug release of MailMate to help track down the message.

    3. The error messages you got (UIDVALIDITY issue) must be resolved. It's extremely inefficient if MailMate has to constantly empty its caches and re-download emails. It is likely to be an issue with the IMAP server and you should contact your IMAP provider (maybe after we have resolved the crashing issue).

Installed the latest release (using the above link). Same problem.

    Ok, try this release.

Open a Terminal window and enable this hidden preference:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugFindBoundary -bool YES

Then launch MailMate like this (assuming it's installed in /Applications/):

    /Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate

Wait for it to crash and then send the Terminal output. The output should include a line at the end like this:

    Deleting message: ...

I'm also interested in the file referenced in that line.

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry about the upload-issue (I need to do some house cleaning).

It seems I cannot download the .eml file. Dropbox claims the file is still being uploaded and therefore cannot be downloaded yet?

don't know what goes wrong, but that file (only 1.9Mb) continues synching in dropbox, and can't zip it... is it locked or so...? But restarted my mac. same issue

maybe it's part of the problem...

It does sound like it might be part of the problem. Can you make a copy of the file to, for example, your Desktop?

In any case, if you want to try to start over with MailMate then you could do it as follows:

    • Go to the /Uses/<username>/Library/Application Support/ folder.
    • Rename or move the MailMate folder.
    • Create a new MailMate folder.
    • Copy the .plist files from the old MailMate folder.
    • Launch MailMate.

Doing the above should make MailMate refetch all emails from the server without you having to reconfigure account(s), mailboxes, etc.

This doesn't solve the UIDVALIDITY problem, but let's see if we can stop the crashes first.

I've tried to make a copy of that file, but even the copy doesn't work... it doesn't synch with dropbox, or even can't send it with wetransfer or even not zip it...
I'll do the above when I'm back home next week, since my connection here is over 4G, and hence have limited total bandwidth available

OK created new (empty) Mailmate folder with old .plist files copied in there. Restarted mailmate. Started nicely, and is now syncing. Does it mean that the problem should be fixed like this?

Well, the problem with the unreadable file is solved, but if you still got the UIDVALIDITY warnings then more work is needed.

Sorry about the late response. Just wanted to note that if this persists then I strongly recommend you contact your IMAP service provider. I can help you generate logs exemplifying the issue if you like.
