Signature placement behavior
Reported by rotor | January 10th, 2012 @ 04:03 PM
After running for a couple of weeks with my standard signature being placed at the bottom of reply messages, I discovered the radio selection in Preferences>Signatures>Default signature/caret placement was set to "Bottom". After switching to "Top", the behavior in reply messages remained unchanged -- the signature and cursor were placed at the bottom of the message window.
I restarted MailMate. No change in the behavior. While a reply message window was open, selecting the Top placement option from the Signature drop-down menu worked. But in any new replies the signature continued to be placed at the bottom.
Next, in Preferences>Signatures, I deleted my signature, made sure "Top" was selected, and then recreated the signature.
Then in a new reply window, my cursor was correctly located at the top of the message, but the signature was not there. Then I discovered that after manually selecting the signature from the drop-down, any subsequent reply message windows would correctly place the cursor at the top AND the signature block would appear automatically.
Despite the fact that this process is working correctly, I recommend MailMate consider some UI improvements that would allow a user to overtly set this up:
1) Make it more evident where a user will start in a reply --
Top or Bottom
2) Allow a designation for a [starting] default signature; The
dynamic signature system can still work as additional signatures
are added and put into use. It is just not obvious to a new user
why the signature block isn't showing on initial use.

Thanks for the constructive comments.
I agree on number 2. Since the list can be ordered then I can just make the first item the default.
I'm not sure I understand number 1. The top/bottom placement is part of the dynamic signatures system.
Here is a trick to reset the signature history. Quit MailMate and then go to the Terminal and paste:
rm ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#signature*
I should probably add a “Reset Usage History” button in the signature preferences which does the above.
