Mailmate slow & freezes after first start

Reported by David | August 12th, 2018 @ 06:54 PM

Hey Benny,

I installed Mailmate for the first time right now and am syncing a quite big gmail account (guess around 400k mails) and a small IMAP on a private server. After the first start Mailmate was quite slow in the UI, freezing for seconds, "not responding" according to activity log, gmail spinner spinning for hours (that I would understand given the amount of mail). It runs on an older 2012 MacBook Pro with 2,9 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB RAM on a SSD drive. Space on the HDD (for data) was getting quite low when it started first, I cleaned up around 30GB now, but speed did not come.
Any ideas how to speed things up a bit?

Thanks,
David

Yes, 400K can put MailMate under a lot of stress while synchronizing. It doesn't help that it's Gmail which is very likely to start throttling the connection (although that should just make it take longer and not make it hang more).

There might be a specific problem/bug with some submailbox or email, but no matter what it'll be easier to track down any problems if doing all this in smaller steps. I suggest you quit MailMate and start over by deleting this folder:

    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/MailMate/

When adding the large account then use “Edit Subscriptions” in the account editor to only synchronize a few folders at first. When these folders are fully synchronized (no mailbox spinners) then add more (and maybe leave out any you don't need offline) using the same button in the IMAP account editor.

Also read this page about Gmail. MailMate works well with Gmail, but it's still kind of required that the user understands how Gmail works compared to standard IMAP servers. For a large Gmail account, it is important to decide if you really need the “[Gmail]/All Mail” mailbox in MailMate (which depends on how you work).

That's the best I can do for you now.

    Thanks for considering MailMate!
